What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercise developed in the first half of the 20th century by Joseph Pilates in Germany that has a heavy focus on posture, breathing, muscle control and flexibility. Its approach has much in common with modern physiotherapy and both fields are quite complementary.

How Can Pilates Help Me?

Pilates can:

It is a low impact form of exercise so it is suitable for a wide range of people and conditions. A key feature of Pilates is that how you perform an exercise is prime importance and so it can often be as much a mental training exercise as a physical one.

Pilates at Performance Podiatry and Physiotherapy

At Performance Podiatry and Physiotherapy classes are supervised by an accredited Pilates trained physio with the support of an APA sports physiotherapist. The main format of the classes is based around small group sessions (there is a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 per class) but one-on-one sessions are also available on request. Our Pilates instructor runs classes with the most up-to-date mat and reformer exercises.

Pilates and physiotherapy are complementary and an integrated approach is used at Performance Podiatry and Physiotherapy. Before commencing pilates you will require a 30min consultation with a physiotherapist to review your injury/medical history and perform a physical screening. Prior to commencing group classes you will need at least one 1-on-1 session with the pilates instructor to enable them to assess your ability levels and get you acquainted with the fundamentals. This also gives you the opportunity to get to know the instructor before commencing group classes. This process is essential so we can ensure that all members of a group class receive their share of the instructor’s attention.

Should you have any difficulties grasping the fundamentals or have specific concerns that may impact on your ability to integrate into the group additional 1-on-1 sessions may be required before commencing group classes. Your instructor will discuss this with you at the end of your initial session should this be required.

Can I claim Pilates classes on my private health insurance?

Our instructor is a qualified physio so classes are claimable on your health fund. 1-on-1 sessions are claimed as normal physio consults and group classes are claimable as group physiotherapy. Health fund rebates vary between funds and levels of cover so contact your health fund to find out how much they will contribute.
